Have been living abroad for the past 5+ years I’ve been travelling back and forth to Denmark quite a few times. Admittedly it hasn’t been easy for me to learn how to pack my cabin bag optimal. I always packed either to little or to much clothes, forgot something important or brought something unnecessary.
In the light of things, like me going to Edinburgh and only being able to bring a carry on, I think I finally cracked the code to how to pack the cabin bag, also I thought I would give you my best tips and advise on how and what to pack in your hand luggage. If you’re one of the lucky ones going or a weekend break away or are you planning your summer holiday, only bringing your cabin back, then I hope this guide will help make your trip a lot more comfortable:
it’s a good idea to plan your outfits in advance. It may sound a little silly, but it works for me. I check the weather forecast and then go through my closet where I mainly pick an outfit for each day. Some bottoms can be used more than once so you can for example bring 2-3 blouses for the same skirt/pair of jeans/shorts or a simple dress can make an whole outfit. Then I always pack an extra outfit because knowing me, I might spill or something.
When I was younger, my problem was often that on holidays I dragged 20 kg of clothes with me and eventually only been been wearing half of it. If you coordinate your outfits from home, you can quickly get an idea of how much clothes you really actually need.
Next of, you must comply with all the rules for what to bring of toiletries. You have a one liter bag, where each single bottle maximum can contain 100 ml, which is not a lot. However, I would recommend checking out what is really required to put in the bag. Lip balms and lipstick doesn’t need to go I normally just keep mine in my jacket pocket. Shampoo and toothpaste I would normally buy when I arrive as must citys now a days has a Poundland or similar, where you buy such stuff for nothing and you’ll save the extra weight for something else.
Additionally it’s possible to get Doves deodorants or in miniature size and it will last approximately 8-10 days depending on how much you use. So that comes in handy. I personally just bring a roll on which always has the right size. When it comes to perfumes it’s a lot worse. It’s possible to get perfumes up to 50 ml, but the bottles do still take up a lot of space in your one liter bag. I don’t have great advise coming to that, other than I usually just throw a few perfume samples into the bag. When I travel on the shorter trips, I almost never have my beloved face cleaner, but instead I use cleaning wipes (make sure you find some decent ones, otherwise you can easily break ) and it doesn’t have to go in the small bag but can just stay in your carry on trolley.

When packing your hand luggage can you for your own sake, put the things, you’ll need to take out going trough security, on top – including your laptop, tablet, toiletries and here’s a little tip! DO NOT put your undies on top! There’s nothing worse than your panties trying to escape your suitcase in front of EVERYONE 🙂
Have a safe trip!
